SPEECH BY CHENG YI
INCOMING CHAIRMAN OF
SUPP BATU LINTANG BRANCH WOMEN SECTION
(2009 – 2011)
I would like to thank all of you, my Batu Lintang Women members for your trust in me by having me as your Chairman. Out of my 21 years in SUPP, my last 9 years in Batu Lintang has re-affirmed my belief that as comrades, we must be able to trust each other, be confident that each of us will look out for each other and protect each other.
You are the kind of members that our Party are proud to have. You are the ones who have given your time selflessly and quietly for the Party. Do you ever ask for anything in return? Never! You are so ready & sincere to extend your hands to welcome our new blood and guide them. What each of us want is to help our community through the good name of our Party.
The people have rejected us in the 2006 election, it is time to vindicate our Party, do the right things in the best interest of our people.
Women – we represent half of SUPP’s membership – we are the foundation of our Party. With today’s women, better educated and better informed, it is the ripe time that we are the ones to steer our Party to the right direction. To do this we must sacrifice some time and responsibility – let each of us put in our effort - rekindle our spirit of sacrifice, service and responsibility. Let us, women, who form the pillar of strength in the Party do our part to steer our party to our original objectives for a fair, just and equal society for all races.
Part of this process is to ensure smooth transition of leadership for the next echelon to move up the Party hierarchy. The Women Section must serve as a platform to develop and group women leaders, so that they will be ready to take up their role side by side with male leaders to effectively serve in the main body of our organization.
The Women Section’s responsibility at this stage of political development in our state and Party, is to hasten this grooming process.
I am, therefore, honoured and humbled that my Branch Women Section has nominated me for the Central Women Section Chair. I accept their nomination with a call to all our women members throughout Sarawak to join me in my quest. I will seek other Branches’ view on this matter.
My quest is to re-direct ourselves to SUPP’s prime objective of ‘a fair, just and equal society for all races’.
These are the same values people strive for all over the world. It is up to us to renew our convictions towards this aim.
During my recent statewide tour to our Women Branches, it is clear that our SUPP women are well informed about the political situation in the state and nation. They are also concerned on our Party’s future direction. The most touching thing is they want to contribute their efforts towards our worthwhile objectives.
Our challenge is to re-ignite those ideals we held when we decided that SUPP was the Political Party to join. We must electrify our members to work towards such ideals, without fear or favour – not just mere lip service but walk the talk.
This is a time to test what we SUPP women are worth?
Do we have the courage to take our journey on the right track? Do we have the integrity to do the right thing or are we just like ‘sheep’ herded by the master?
We must reject money politics! Reject being patronized by our male comrades!
We are: women with integrity, intelligence and independence to make the right choice!
A step at a time, together we can be a force.
SUPP women: WE can be the agents of change for our Party!
SUPP women: I ask if you are ready to make the sacrifice and take up the challenge? Our destiny is in your hands.
There is still hope yet for SUPP.
